The contemporary art system is very complex and its paradigms differ from those of modernity and the last century. The phenomena that develop within it are multifaceted, go in different directions and are not all easily detectable. This paper focuses on one phenomenon enrooted in the contemporary art scene, here referred to as “photogenic art”. In the first part, through historical-critical and philosophical speculations, some of the changes dictated by the digital revolution and the neoliberal economic system are described, related to the production and fruition of the work of art in today’s context. In the second part, within the described scenario, the properties of the phenomenon of photogenic art are framed through the use of some significant examples to then trace its limits and perspectives.
