Living in a current era of mass production, mass media, and mass consumption, individuals appear to be looking for ways to differentiate themselves from others. This leads to the question: What general role does Need for Uniqueness play for aesthetics and the arts in general? The concept of uniqueness has a long-standing tradition in art history and also is essential in the (psychology of) aesthetics. This article presents a review and speculation on this question discussing findings and supplementing them with research desiderata.
