The factors that led to the invention of figurative depictions remain a mystery. However, with recent discoveries in archaeology and research in visual psychology, as well as the neuroscience of vision, great strides have been made in resolving the issue. In this article, the insights from those disciplines will be drawn together to reveal how the precursors and various phenomena unfolded in a way that gave rise to the invention of the first depictions. In order to explore that issue, we need to delve far back into the archaeological record that has provided important evidence which, along with crucial technological advances, has opened up new pathways to understanding the emergence of figurative “art”.
